We had a friend, who is now deceased, that had a heart condition. She had a card that allowed her to park in handicapped parking spaces. She had people fussing at her all the time for parking in these spaces. You can’t always see someone’s handicap.
My mom had severe RA. She worked so hard to walk “normal “ but it was terribly difficult & could only walk short distances. Her Dr insisted she have a handicapped placard. We parked in a handicap space To go into a restaurant. We got out of the car & a man said something vile to us about abusing the system. My Mom didn’t say a word, she lifted her pant legs above her knees to show her badly gnarled ankles & knees. I said “you should be ashamed”. He didn’t apologize, he just walked away. A truly nasty human.

I have had RA since I was 24. I’m 69 now. I have a handicap sticker because there’s days I feel almost human but after doing my grocery shopping my body can hardly make it back to car. People don’t see my deformed left foot the ankle that can act up at any time the replacements in knees both shoulders. No one has the right to ask or judge me! They need to mind their own business.
Not all handicaps are visible, but if you don’t have a sticker/license plate stay OUT of handicap parking!
My wife has a (certified by DoctorS) body health issues (herniated discs; bum knee [and they told her a surgery would ‘fix’ her knee]). Recently, a doctor told her she was ‘qualified’ to get a handicap tag.
–A little background to illustrate my comment, because of her health issues I am the one shovels the snow (two car driveway and path to the front door) in winter time, and the one who does all the weeding in the backyard, and do ALL the driving all the time (12 years worth).
Once that has been told, we have used the handicap tag once in six months.
I explain, whenever we are going anywhere, I drop her off in front of whatever it is going to, hand her over her walker, then I go to find a parking space. Once we are finished doing what we went to do, I am the one who walks to get the car, and come to pick her up at the front of the store/supermarket/doctor’s office, etc. Making the handicap tag obsolete.
No doubt there are people who abuse the benefit. However, it s healthier if everybody would mind their own business.
Closing my comment. So much harm come from not being patient with life around us. Wanting to fix the world ourselves is a lost cause.
(BTW, I walk and behave as a fully capable individual yet, because of two open brain surgeries -due to brain aneurysms- I could have qualified for handicap plates (I refused to get). The one time we used that handicap tag and, upon a person seeing me get off the car, pull my wife walker out of the trunk, and set her off to shop, he began to berate me yelling at me saying “I was body able, that I should be ashamed to use the parking spot” I turned around, took off the baseball hat I had on, and I began to talk as if I had a speech impediment, while showing him my two scars on top of my head [helped by the hair line receding], he was ever so apologetic. To which using my normal voice I said “although the brain surgeries were real, there were no visible long lasting damage, however it is always better to NEVER judge anybody by what one sees, it may turn around and kick us in the teeth”).

I have severe Fibromyalgia and I have a tag that I hang from my mirror. On the way into the store I may not look handicapped but on the way out my hip, and back pain is through the roof and I’m walking really slow.
My father had a hang tag also because he had a bad heart. Triple bypass surgery and also lung disease. He was always getting grief from people assuming that he didn’t need the tag.
