“Helicopters Just Don’t Fall From The Sky” Au contraire mon petit chou!
In my far distant past, stationed at the Marine Corps ‘New River Air Station’ in NC, we had at least two helicopters “fall from the sky.” Fortunately, only one failed to ‘auto-rotate’ without killing anybody! There is no requirement to ‘chop the tail off’ for one of those birds to ‘quit flying.’
Maybe a drone flew into the tail rotor. Maybe the tail rotor driveshaft broke and caused a cascade of failures. If the tail rotor fails, you’re done. You lose control and you’re going down. Why did the main rotor separate from the helicopter? I flew in a helicopter only once, and I’ll never do it again.
