As Biden was leaving Michigan on Friday night, CBS reporter Bo Erickson confronted him and asked him about the recent story concerning his son, Hunter. Allegedly, Hunter introduced Vadym Pozharskiy to his dad, old Joe, in 2015.
Back then, Pozharskiy was a key adviser to Burisma, while Joe Biden was in charge of the US policy towards Ukraine as the United States vice president. Hunter was also serving on the board of Burisma when the meeting allegedly took place. As he served on the board, he was paid tens of thousands of dollars each month.
“I know you’d ask it. I have no response. It’s another smear campaign, right up your alley, those are the questions you always ask,” Biden replied, annoyed.
Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate rarely speaks to the press. When Bo Erickson posted his story on Twitter, fellow CBS reporters Ed O’Keefe and Paula Reid defended him for questioning Biden.
Biden’s campaign advisor Andrew Bates spoke about the incident. His campaign has denied that Biden has ever officially met with Pozharskiy, but they have not explicitly said that he has never met the former Burisma advisor.
“Biden’s campaign would not rule out the possibility that the former VP had some kind of informal interaction with Pozharskiy, which wouldn’t appear on Biden’s official schedule,” Politico reported.
Some senior Biden advisers had also served him at the time of the meeting, including Michael Carpenter and Amos Hochstein. According to them, Biden might have met Burisma executive Pozharskiy unofficially.
Hunter working for Burisma from April 2014 to April of 2019 while his father served as the US vice president was seen as an issue by many who saw it as a conflict of interest.
Because of that, Biden claimed that he never spoke to Hunter about any of his business dealings overseas.
Members of Obama’s administration had warned him time and again that it looked terrible for his son to be working at a Ukrainian company that the US officials believed to be corrupt, but Biden has denied any conflict of interest or wrongdoing by him or his son related to Burisma.
However, in an interview with ABC News, Hunter himself admitted that his father’s political position helped him secure the high paying job at Burisma’s board of directors.
In 2016, old Joe had also threatened to withhold $1 billion in US loan guarantees to Ukraine as the vice president if the country did not fire its top prosecutor. The prosecutor wanted to investigate Burisma’s owner for corruption, which is why he had to go. And in 2018, Biden had boasted about this.
