Trust former Vice President Joe Biden to say things in a slip of the tongue. As someone with declining mental capacity, his gaffes have turned into jokes and memes.
While we respect our troops battling overseas under all kinds of weather, Joe Biden doesn’t seem to be one who pays the same reverence.
In a 2016 trip to the United Arab Emirates, the former Vice President jokingly said “stupid bastards” in addressing members of the US military and overseas coalition partners.
Expanding the Obama administration’s position in the Middle East in its final year, Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, went on a trip to Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s capital, in March 2016. During the trip, the former Vice President addressed the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing members stationed at the Al-Dhafra Air Base.
The trip, shall we say, included banters, which turned out awkward at some point.
First Lt. Karen Johnson, the officer in charge of the Sentry Aircraft Maintenance Unit of 380th’s Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, and 380th AEW commander, Brig. Gen. Daniel Orcutt welcomed the Bidens.
First Lt. Johnson introduced Joe Biden onstage. The familiarity has been built even before he became a Vice President. Johnson had met him previously as a Delaware senator when he nominated her to attend the Air Force Academy almost a decade ago. Johnson came from the same state.
Joe Biden unwittingly used their history to break the ice with more than a thousand servicemen, and as expected, failed miserably.
The Democrat Presidential candidate told the audience that he has an incredibly good judgment. Joe Biden said, “One, I married Jill, and two, I appointed Johnson to the academy.”
“I just want you to know that, so clap for that you stupid bastards,” Biden jokingly said. “Man, you all are a dull bunch. It must be slow here, man.”
Starting with a terrible joke, he concluded with a praise to the armed forces as the “finest generation of warriors the world has ever, ever known.”
Only portions of his address made it to the news at the time. A part which made to the national headlines is his encouragement of the US military to “squeeze the heart of Daesh in Iraq and Syria.” Biden used the Arabic name referring to the “Islamic State” of Iraq and Syria.
When the video resurfaced on Friday, several were quick to rebuke the former Vice President saying that it was inappropriate.
Biden’s camp confirmed the authenticity of the footage and released a statement to Washington Examiner.
Andrew Bates, Biden’s campaign director of rapid response, told the outlet, “Vice President Biden was jokingly encouraging the audience to clap for an airwoman on the stage, and several service members can be seen laughing and smiling at the comment.”
“Seconds before, he praised them for ‘the incredible sacrifices [they] make for our country.’ He thanked them for their patriotism and courage throughout and closed his remarks by saying, ‘you’re the finest generation of warriors the world has ever, ever known’ – receiving an enthusiastic ovation,” continued Bates.
Joe Biden’s “stupid bastards” remarks were put on the spotlight after he criticized the POTUS to have allegedly called World War I victim soldiers as “losers” and “suckers” in a 2018 trip in France.
Attendees of the said trip have unequivocally denied the allegations published in The Atlantic.
