On Monday’s episode of The View, Texas Senator Ted Cruz had appeared and explained what he said was a major failure by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo regarding the COVID-19 virus.
On Friday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had announced that he would be removing all the COVID-19 restrictions in the state. His co-host, Joy Behar, had shown concern over DeSantis’ decision, and Cruz had replied with Cuomo’s scandal.
During the latter half of the broadcast, Behar had accused Cruz of changing and avoiding the topic of DeSantis’ statewide announcement after he brought up Cuomo’s COVID-19 nursing home scandal.
The scandal was something that Cuomo had been scrutinized for. In March, he had ordered nursing homes to accept even the patients who had tested positive for COVID-19.
Newsbusters’ Kristina Marsh noted, “As each host tried and failed to trap the Republican senator with liberal talking points [earlier in the show], Joy Behar lost her patience at the end of the interview when talking about shutdowns and coronavirus.”
Marsh added, “[Behar] fretted about how Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis had let bars and restaurants open back up and asked [Cruz] if Texas would do the same.”
Behar had told Cruz, “He said they won’t be closing anything going forward.”
Cruz responded to her by saying that he supports the reopening of the economy. He also added that the death rate from COVID-19 in Florida — and in Texas, his home state — was low, compared with the death rates in the Democratic states.
“New York, in particular, has led the country in death rate, and I think it had a lot to do with the Democratic governor there — Gov. Cuomo — sending people who had COVID into nursing homes,” he insisted.
Behar was triggered and angrily said, “That’s not true!” She also attempted to talk over Cruz, but he didn’t let her.
“Well, the death rate [in New York] is three times as high as the death rate in Texas or Florida,” he stated.
Behar was clearly upset by then, and it seems she did not want to talk about New York. “I asked you about DeSantis. Answer me about DeSantis, please. I’m talking about Florida right now, not New York. New York got hit very early, and a lot of people were coming in without any kind of sanctions on it.”
Cruz apparently found her response funny. “The policy of the governors of New York and New Jersey of sending people who were COVID-positive into nursing homes was catastrophic. And it resulted in a horrific death rate,” Cruz said, again ignoring her remark about Florida, which only angered Behar further.
Behar shot back, “Deflection! You are deflecting, sir! You are deflecting the question!”
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg jumped in when there was a brief silence. She spoke out and directed the responsibility to President Donald Trump.
“Had the man who is running the country right now given us this information in January when he had it — when we could have maybe done something a little differently — it might have worked differently. I just wanted to point that out. It’s not about whose people died more. People died, and they didn’t have to.”
No matter if they belonged to the left or to the right, people have died from COVID-19. It isn’t the problem of the Democrats or the Republicans alone. It’s affecting the people of our country.
As our political leaders, they should be doing everything to beat the virus, not arguing with each other over who was right and wrong.
