COVID-19 has definitely made life difficult for everyone around the world. People are facing a difficult time getting access to supplies and taking care of their day to day activities.

When it comes to law and order, maintaining discipline around the country is undoubtedly a challenge. Things may appear normal, but there are few instances when it goes out of hand, which happened in Florida’s famous Miami Beach.

The actual incident

On July 30, 2020, a 29-year old man was arrested. He was held at Miami Beach in Florida.

Why? The young man started firing bullets. Although no one was hurt during the gunfire, it created panic. The man claimed that the shots had to be fired as a sign of warning. He directed the gun at a boy and his mother, who did not follow the rules of social distancing. They were at the Miami Hotel Lobby, and it agitated the young 29-year-old to have seen them not observing the safety protocol.

The background

The mother was with her family. They were on vacation at the Crystal Beach Suites Hotel. The family is billeted in the hotel on the 27th of July, 2020 said by Ernesto Rodriguez from the Miami Beach Police Department.

The mother quoted that she was with her young boy, and they had to go to the lobby for personal reasons. They met Douglas Marks at the lobby elevator who they do not personally know.

It was a matter of seconds before Marks started to say, “You all need to leave.” The mother and her son were puzzled at Marks’ words. They didn’t realize until he spoke again and said, “You all aren’t social distancing.” However, the mother and her son decided to ignore him.

Soon, she grabbed her son and started to sit down on a couch in the lobby. However, she was cautious about the situation around her. She felt threatened by Marks’ presence.

Marks continuously said, “Let me…… take care of them …………. I have two people ……. Who are not following the directions.”

Marks also mumbled, “You all need to leave.” He kept mumbling before firing gunshots and then ran out of the Crystal Beach Suites Hotel.

The son supported the recollection of the mother. He claimed that everything that was said by the mother is accurate. He also told that Marks was seen holding a black gun. Few other witnesses at the hotel confirmed the incident. They revealed that multiple gunshots were heard at the hotel, and Marks was seen running outside after.

USA Today and many other media institutions gathered details about the incident at Crystal Beach Suites Hotel. They were probing how Marks was allowed to enter into the hotel premises with gun weapons at arm’s distance.

The other side of the story

Marks also confessed to his involvement in the incident. The Miami Beach Criminal Investigation Department captured him. During the investigation, Marks revealed that he believed someone was following him. In fact, he asked the clerk at Crystal Beach Suites to call 911. Consequently, he ended up firing four shots as a sign of warning. The hotel’s surveillance camera neatly captured the incident and its details in the lobby.

The judgment

Marks was sent to the Turner Guildford Knight Correctional Center. He was charged for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, use of a firearm for a felony, and for discharging a firearm in public.
