On Thursday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, alerted the American people ahead of time to be careful and still follow safety precautions as the fall and winter “flu” season approaches.
COVID-19 news over the past few months have been alarming and very stressful to the Americans who are now wanting to be over the rhetoric. People are wanting to know if their lives will ever return to normal.
However, Dr. Fauci delivers terrible news as he cautions the people that the upcoming cold season is “not going to be easy.” He advised the Americans to “hunker down” and that the new normal will likely last until the end of 2021.
The NIAID Director said the measures needed to prevent the coronavirus’s spread are not being taken seriously. According to Fauci, most Americans still underestimate the disease, which has become an essential topic with infectious disease experts panel from Harvard Medical School on Thursday afternoon.
According to The Hill, Fauci added during the panel that vaccines would likely be available to the public by the year end or early next year as the trial’s results are “progressing very well.”
The director shared that around 40,000 new cases were recorded, which is an “unacceptably high baseline.” He said that surges are likely to happen post-Labor Day. As such, each city must strictly implement measures to control the escalation. Experts said the country was heading into the flu season with unacceptably high cases.
In an interview with CNN, Dr. Fauci expressed his disappointments on how Americans are misbehaving regarding limiting the spread of COVID-19. Television clips of several people gathering indoors and bars appalled him. This is in great contrast to Australia, which did an outstanding job of implementing the mandates, including lockdowns.
Australia also had the “lightest flu season in memory.” While the citizens thought that the masks, social distancing, and staying indoors are precautions of COVID-19, they also successfully lowered the influenza cases as a secondary effect.
Dr. Fauci wishes the same thing for the US. He said that if the Americans also observe the mandates, the country will likewise record fewer influenza cases.
However, most Americans are already too eager to go outdoors and resume their “normal” lives. Several have assumed things would be back to the old normal once upcoming election is over.
Dr. Fauci’s grave warnings only burst their bubble, making them realize that to “hunker down” is indeed the only way to do for now.
