Catholic Bishops formed a group assigned to respond to “concerns” after fears mounted on Biden’s policies, specifically abortion and gay rights.
On November 17, at the end of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ online meeting, LA Archbishop Jose Gomez announced the formed group. He stated praiseworthy proposals of Biden yet also the policies that should be denounced.
Biden would be the second Catholic president-elect after John F. Kennedy.
Archbishop Gomez said that Biden gave reason to believe that his faith commitments would make him support good policies, including refugees and the poor, immigration reform, the death penalty, climate change, and against racism.
“He has also given us reason to believe that he will support policies that are against some fundamental values that we hold dear as Catholics. These policies include the Hyde Amendment’s repeal and the preservation of Roe vs. Wade,” the archbishop continued.
The Hyde Amendment prevents federal funds from compensating for abortion except when saving the woman, or if the pregnancy arises from rape or incest.
Archbishop Gomez stated, “Both of these policies undermine our preeminent priority of the elimination of abortion.”
However, he also enumerated other policies “alarming to the bishops,” including the passage of the Equality Act.
Gomez argued that such policies, including the Equality Act, “pose a serious threat to the common good whenever any politicians support them.” He said that Catholic politicians’ support of the policy creates confusion about what is being taught by the church.
An organization that opposed Biden’s campaign, CatholicVote.org, applauded Gomez’s statements. They fully agree with USCCB President Archbishop Gomez’s assessment of Joe Biden’s Policies.
The group added that several of Biden’s plans create “confusion among the faithful and pose a serious threat to the common good.”
Biden was then urged to repent by Texas Bishop Joseph Strickland two days after the online meeting.
Strickland tweeted, “As a bishop, I beg Mr. Biden to repent of his dissent from Catholic teaching on abortion & marriage for his own salvation & the good of our nation.”
The Texas Bishop said that since Biden aspires to the highest office, he must be guided by the “truth God has revealed to us.” Strickland claims to pray for Biden “to find Truth.”
